Her sister Cassandra burned many of her letters after her death, leaving us with only fragments of her private world. ‘We get glimpses, but it’s incomplete,’ Griffin says. While many scholars mourn the loss of these letters, Griffin argues that Cassandra’s actions preserved Austen’s privacy and created an air of mystery. ‘It leaves room for readers and filmmakers to imagine what’s missing,’ she adds. This enigma has fueled countless adaptations and interpretations, ensuring Austen’s legacy remains as vibrant as ever.
