Last Sunday, FC Barcelona tasted sweet victory, securing the Spanish Super Cup for the second consecutive year with a thrilling 3-2 win against arch-rivals Real Madrid. This triumph, coupled with their clean sweep of domestic trophies last season, has ignited hopes among fans that this could be the year they finally clinch their sixth UEFA Champions League title – a feat they haven't achieved in over a decade, with their last win dating back 11 years. But here's where it gets controversial... Toni Kroos, the former midfield maestro for Real Madrid (and German football icon), isn't buying into the hype. He believes Barcelona's European journey will ultimately fall short.
Kroos shared his rather blunt assessment on the podcast Einfach mal Luppen, which he co-hosts with his brother, Felix Kroos. He reiterated a sentiment he expressed last season, casting doubt on Barcelona's ability to conquer Europe. His brother, Felix, set the stage by mentioning the Barcelona's joyous Super Cup win, before adding: "But now the Champions League is coming up for Barcelona, where they will be playing against top-level opponents.”
Interrupting his brother, Toni Kroos dropped the bombshell: “They are not going to win any international titles, at least that’s what I think.” Ouch!
And this is the part most people miss... Kroos isn't just making a snap judgment. He's consistently voiced concerns about Barcelona's approach. Earlier this season, following PSG's victory over Barcelona, Kroos remarked that the Catalan team needed to be “smarter.” He elaborated, suggesting that their vulnerability becomes glaringly obvious when fatigue sets in and they fail to adapt their style of play. Think of it like a boxer sticking to the same punches even when they're clearly not landing – eventually, their opponent will figure them out.
Even with his skepticism, Kroos does acknowledge Barcelona's strengths. Back in October, he told El Chiringuito that Xavi's team (at the time) plays “one of the most attractive styles of football in Europe… the most attractive in Europe”. So, he's not completely dismissing their talent.
However, he doubled down on his concerns, adding that “I also think that at Barcelona they take so many risks… On a bad day for Pedri, Lamine Yamal or Raphinha, any team can hurt them and eliminate them from the Champions League.” Essentially, he sees them as a high-risk, high-reward team that might be undone by inconsistency or a few key players underperforming.
