A thrilling scramble for the lead! In a nail-biting turn of events, Lexi Thompson and Wyndham Clark emerged as the frontrunners at the Grant Thornton Invitational, leaving golf enthusiasts in awe.
The stage was set at the picturesque Tiburon Golf Club, where ideal scoring conditions and a unique scramble format created an exciting atmosphere. Little did we know, a late surge would shake up the leaderboard.
But here's where it gets controversial... Michael Brennan, a PGA Tour of Americas veteran, stepped in for Daniel Berger, and alongside Charley Hull, they dominated with 13 consecutive holes of birdies and eagles. Their only hiccup? Pars on the 16th and 18th holes, which left them tied for the lead.
Charley Hull, in a candid moment, revealed, "I was nervous today because I was tinkering with my swing last week. But it all came together beautifully."
And this is the part most people miss... Thompson and Clark's late charge was nothing short of spectacular. They birdied or eagled nine of the last ten holes, showcasing their incredible synergy and power off the tee.
"We have a similar game style," Clark explained. "When one of us is in play, we're way past the competition, giving us a significant advantage."
The record-breaking score of 17-under 55, one stroke better than the previous mark, solidifies their position at the top. But the competition isn't backing down.
Lauren Coughlin and Andrew Novak trail by two shots, while other notable pairs like Rose Zhang and Michael Kim, Nelly Korda and Denny McCarthy, and Jennifer Kupcho and Chris Gotterup are hot on their heels, just three shots back.
Tomorrow, the format shifts to foursomes, a challenging test where only one ball is in play. The final round on Sunday will be a modified fourballs format.
Defending champions Jake Knapp and Patty Tavatanakit are not far behind, sitting four shots off the pace after a strong finish to their round.
So, who will ultimately claim the Grant Thornton Invitational title? Will Thompson and Clark hold on to their lead, or will one of the chasing packs make a late surge of their own? Stay tuned, golf fans, as this tournament promises to deliver an unforgettable finish!
