Tanzania is taking bold steps to tackle its recurring water shortages, and the proposed national water grid is a game-changer. The government's ambitious plan aims to address the growing impact of climate change on water availability across the country.
Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba announced this initiative during a groundbreaking ceremony for the Lindi-Ruangwa-Nachingwea water supply project, a $119 billion endeavor. This project will harness water from the Nyangao River and is set to benefit 57 villages spread across three districts, significantly enhancing access to clean and safe water in southern Tanzania, an area plagued by unreliable supply.
Dr. Nchemba emphasized that the government's renewed focus on water infrastructure is a direct response to the challenges posed by climate change. "Climate change is not a distant threat; it's already affecting many parts of our country, even those with good infrastructure. We, as Tanzanians, must take decisive action to address this global challenge," he stated.
The ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), has pledged in its election manifesto to develop a national water grid, mirroring the success of the national electricity grid. This integrated system will enable the coordination and interconnection of various water projects, allowing for the redistribution of water to areas facing shortages during critical periods.
"Our commitment is to ensure no community is left behind. We will establish a national water grid and implement projects in a way that benefits all Tanzanians," affirmed the Prime Minister.
The announcement comes at a time when water shortages are a recurring issue across Tanzania, affecting both urban and rural areas. Prolonged dry spells, declining river flows, and diminishing water sources have led to intermittent supply and water rationing in several regions. Some rural communities still rely on unsafe water sources, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
Ruangwa, the constituency that will benefit the most from this project with 34 villages connected, was previously represented by former Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa. Dr. Nchemba acknowledged Majaliwa's strong advocacy for this project, ensuring its funding and progress. "This project is a testament to the former Prime Minister's dedication to ensuring reliable water access for the people of this area," he said.
Minister for Water Jumaa Aweso confirmed that the project is on track, with some villages expected to receive water before February 2026. "This is not a quick fix; it's a long-term solution. We are prioritizing climate-resilient infrastructure to secure water access for the future," Mr. Aweso added.
As climate pressures intensify, the government believes that large-scale projects like the Lindi-Ruangwa-Nachingwea scheme, combined with the national water grid, will be vital in ensuring water security for households, agriculture, and industry.
