The tourism industry in South Africa is experiencing an optimistic revival as it approaches the peak holiday season, fueled by a fresh public-private collaboration aimed at enhancing safety and increasing visitor confidence.
This week, the South African cabinet has given the green light to a comprehensive tourism growth partnership plan. This strategic five-year initiative has been crafted in cooperation with various stakeholders in the tourism sector, with the primary goal of unlocking the industry’s potential to act as a catalyst for inclusive economic development and job creation across the nation.
The ambitious objectives set forth in this plan target significant growth by 2029. Among these goals is an increase in international tourist arrivals from 8.9 million to an impressive 15 million, coupled with an elevation in foreign tourist spending from R92 billion to R115 billion annually.
Additionally, the initiative outlines plans to enhance domestic travel, aiming to raise annual local trips from 40 million to 45 million. In terms of employment, the strategy seeks to increase direct jobs in tourism from the current level of 750,000 to 1 million, contributing to a total of 2.3 million jobs related to the tourism sector.
Tourism plays a vital role in South Africa's economy, accounting for 8.9% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP), making it an essential pillar of economic stability and growth.
