Singapore Schools Hiring! 1,000+ Teachers in 2025 - Mid-Career Switchers Welcome! (2026)

Singapore's education sector is undergoing a significant transformation, with an ambitious plan to hire over 1,000 new teachers in 2025. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Education (MOE), aims to address the growing demand for educators and bring fresh perspectives into the classroom. But here's where it gets interesting: half of these applicants are not your typical fresh graduates; they are mid-career professionals making a bold career switch.

The MOE has reported an increase in teacher applications over the past three years, a trend that Education Minister Desmond Lee highlighted in July. He announced that Singapore would ramp up teacher hiring, increasing the annual recruitment from around 700 to over 1,000. This surge in interest is evident in the latest figures, with 29,605 teachers in 2024 compared to 30,396 in 2023.

MOE has implemented a rigorous recruitment process to identify suitable candidates, including a structured interview process and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) teacher training programme. Shortlisted applicants for PGDE typically receive interview invitations within three to four weeks, and all untrained teaching applicants must conduct a lesson presentation as part of the interview.

However, the process can be lengthy, with half of the successful candidates receiving offers within two to five months of their interview date. MOE acknowledges that longer wait times can be a concern, especially for mid-career applicants who are balancing their current jobs with the preparation for a career change.

In November, Workers' Party MP Kenneth Tiong raised questions about these recruitment timelines and processes in Parliament. He expressed concern that prolonged wait times might lead qualified candidates to seek other opportunities. In response, MOE assured that they would maintain communication with applicants throughout the process and stay in touch with those who have attended interviews.

Successful untrained applicants undergo a school stint to assess their suitability for teaching before enrolling in the National Institute of Education's (NIE) PGDE preparatory programme. They are then posted to schools after completing their training.

Two mid-career applicants, who spoke to ST on the condition of anonymity, shared their experiences. Despite completing interviews and medical assessments in the first half of 2025, they are still awaiting confirmation of their applications' success. They were informed that their start dates had been pushed back by about six months, from December 2025 to July 2026, with no guarantee of employment.

The lack of communication during the application process, which can stretch for months without updates, has been a source of frustration for these applicants. They highlighted the challenge of planning their resignation from full-time jobs without the assurance of a confirmed teaching offer, making the prolonged process even more stressful.

Dr. Jason Tan, an associate professor at NIE, emphasizes the value that mid-career individuals bring to the teaching profession. They enter the field at an older age compared to fresh graduates but offer unique perspectives. For instance, they can contribute to schools' applied learning programmes, connecting students' knowledge and skills with real-world situations, especially in areas like STEM, languages, humanities, business, and digital media.

Additionally, their age and potential parenting experience provide them with a deeper understanding of parental concerns. As Dr. Tan notes, "If they are parents themselves, they have first-hand experience of interacting with school-age children. This empathy can greatly enhance parent-teacher communication."

So, while the recruitment process may be lengthy and challenging, the benefits of having experienced mid-career professionals join the teaching fraternity are undeniable. It adds a layer of diversity and real-world expertise to Singapore's education system.
