A coalition of industry players is exploring a methanol bunkering and supply network along the US Gulf Coast. ABS, ENEOS, NYK Line, and Seacor have begun a joint study to map out how commercial ship-to-ship methanol bunkering could work in practice.
The group aims to establish the United States’ first fully operational ship-to-ship methanol bunkering service, according to a joint press release issued on Friday. ENEOS will investigate procurement and supply routes for low-carbon methanol, including green methanol sourced from C2X’s Beaver Lake Renewable Energy facility in Louisiana.
Construction of the facility is planned to start in the second half of next year, with operations anticipated to begin by late 2028. The plant could produce up to 500,000 metric tons per year of green methanol and is expected to serve demand across several sectors, notably shipping.
NYK Line will leverage its experience from LNG bunkering to support the development of methanol bunkering vessels, while Seacor brings Jones Act operations know-how and engineering capabilities. ABS will provide the classification society services and regulatory support necessary to establish methanol bunkering operations in the US.
The joint press release emphasized that the collaboration among ABS, ENEOS, NYK Line, and SEACOR is meant to help advance a carbon-neutral future for the maritime industry.
