Water crisis in Maidstone: Operational issues disrupt water supply
Thousands of residents in Maidstone are facing a challenging weekend due to a water crisis. South East Water (SEW) has announced that customers in Hollingbourne, Headcorn, and surrounding areas are without water, with some experiencing disruptions since Saturday morning. The issue stems from operational problems at Southern Water, which pumps treated water to these regions.
Steve Andrews, incident manager at SEW, explains that the low pressure or intermittent supply is caused by an operational issue at Southern Water, which pumps 20 million litres of treated water daily. The supply has been temporarily halted, leading to low storage reservoir levels.
Maidstone Borough Council has advised food businesses without running water to close for hygiene reasons. SEW is working to prevent outages and restore service, moving water from other network areas and using tankers to inject water directly into the system.
The crisis is a result of a series of burst water mains on SEW's network earlier this week, exacerbated by Storm Goretti's impact on water treatment and quality. SEW expects the situation to stabilize by January 13th, but residents may face continued disruptions until then.
This water crisis highlights the vulnerability of water supply systems to operational issues and external factors like storms. It also underscores the importance of proactive measures to prevent and manage such disruptions.
