A true sports legend is about to be honored, and it's a moment that will go down in history! Detroit Edison Public School Academy (DEPSA) is set to retire the iconic jersey of Rickea Jackson, a trailblazing WNBA star and an inspiration to many. But here's where it gets controversial... this ceremony isn't just about basketball; it's a celebration of excellence, legacy, and the power of dreams.
On December 23rd, during halftime of the women's varsity basketball game, DEPSA will permanently honor Jackson's extraordinary impact. With a three-time state championship title and the prestigious Michigan's Miss Basketball award under her belt, Jackson's No. 5 jersey will be the first to be retired by the school's girls' basketball program. Imagine that!
Jackson's journey from DEPSA to the WNBA is nothing short of remarkable. After an impressive collegiate career, she was drafted fourth overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in 2024, making history as the first Michigan charter school alumna to play in the WNBA. And her impact? Well, it speaks for itself. She dominated the court, averaging 13.4 points per game, and became the first player from her draft class to reach the 1,000-point milestone. She even signed an endorsement deal with Skechers, a first for the WNBA!
