Tanning apps that promise 'safe' sun routines are actually undermining efforts to combat skin cancer, according to experts. These apps, heavily promoted by influencers, are targeting young Australians, including those as young as four, with dangerous tanning advice. Despite their claims of 'safe' and 'healthy' tanning, the reality is far from it.
The apps encourage users to choose their desired skin color, from 'espresso glow' to 'golden bronze', and then select tanning intensity levels, such as 'mild', 'medium', or 'intense', for 'faster, deeper tanning'. Some even suggest adding body oils, tanning butters, and accelerants to enhance the process. This deliberate exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a major concern for dermatologists.
Dr. Deshan Sebaratnam, a dermatologist and professor, emphasizes that there is no such thing as a 'safe tan'. He explains that a tan is a distress signal from the skin, indicating damage caused by UV radiation. Any color change in the skin signifies harm, regardless of how gradual the process is. Sebaratnam highlights the risk of UV damage early in life, as it increases the lifetime risk of skin cancer, even after the skin heals.
The use of tanning accelerants or oils, as recommended by some apps, is also a cause for alarm. These products may contain ingredients that increase photosensitivity, leading to severe burns. Emma Glassenbury, the head of the Cancer Council Victoria's SunSmart program, warns that parents are increasingly concerned about their children's tanning habits and UV exposure. A poll revealed that 23% of teens aged 12-17 mistakenly believe a tan protects against skin cancer, while half prefer a tanned appearance.
The consequences of these tanning apps are dire. Approximately 2,000 Australians lose their lives to skin cancer annually. Experts urge Australians to avoid these risky apps, especially targeting young people, as they undermine public health efforts to combat skin cancer. The focus should be on educating the public about the dangers of UV exposure and promoting safe alternatives to achieve a healthy glow.
